1950 - This is a view of WI’s auditorium. Freshmen had to use the balcony. The center seats on the bottom were reserved for seniors only.  Juniors and sophomores were seated on each side.

1951 – Clay B. Hite retired from all Washington Irving sports this year and became Dean of Boys.

 

1951 – Tony Albert Folio came back to Washington Irving High School as head coach.  He also coached here from 1933 to 1946.

1955 - WI Championship Basketball Team. They were undefeated with 18 wins in the regular season.

WI produced three major college players from this team, Bob Clousson and Jim Warren at WVU and Bob Hart at Marshall.

1957 -





1957 – Orie McConkey died on February 10th at the age of 84.   His main goal in life was to see that every student, passing through the doors of Washington Irving High School, got the best education they could receive.



Mr. McConkey was a principal of Clarksburg and Washington Irving High Schools a total of 50 years.  He graduated 5,634 students.

1957- In October of this year, the Arcade Building between West Main Street and Lee Avenue was destroyed by fire. 

           Not a beautiful sight to look at....



However, beauty could be found in these 1957 Senior Princesses.

This high scoring Hilltopper squad chalked up a fifteen-win and four-loss seasonal record for the city championship and a second place berth in the Big Ten Conference.

1958 – Thanks to funds obtained through a school levy, that was approved by the citizens of Harrison County, the WI swimming pool was re-opened in 1958.

In addition to students using the pool during gym classes, the pool was made available to the Harrison County Red Cross for teaching water safety classes to the citizens of the community.

1958 - Clay Bramer Hite died unexpectedly on Easter morning at the age of 62.


 



1958 – Tony Folio left Washington Irving High School for another out of state coaching job.

 
He coached at WI from 1933 to 1946 and from 1951 to 1958.





1958 – Coach William A. Moore took over as Athletic Director at Washington Irving.  His assistant was Al Castellana.


One year later, they produced a City, County and Big Ten championship team.  This Washington Irving team was ranked 4th in the state.



Coach Moore and Coach Castellana received recognition as County Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year.


1958 - W. D. Judy retired after 32 years of teaching at Washington Irving High School.




1958 – Mr. Lewis Traugh’s  Chemistry Class.



1958 – Maude Yoak and Grace Albright both retired from teaching this year.
