1932 - Reminiscences. 







1932 – Washington Irving High School had its first marching band. The band was under the leadership of Professor A. W. Shaw until 1940.


1932 - This same year the new Harrison County Court House opened at the corner of Main and South 3d Streets.

Also in 1932, Harry Powers "The Bluebeard of Quiet Dell" was executed by hanging.


 His trial was held at the Moore Opera House on 4th Street.

1932 - 1933 – Tony Albert Folio starts a coaching career at Washington Irving High School.

Tony graduated from WI in 1929 and attended Duquesne University where he was a football star.

1934 - The WI Class of 1934 produced the first yearbook “Memoirs”.  (1934 to 1996)  1996 was WIHS and Robert C. Byrd.

1935 - Virginia Nutter was hired as an English teacher at Washington Irving.  (1935 to 1972)



Class of 1935 hold a reunion.  Miss Pearl Custer is on the right holding the poster. She graduated from WIHS in 1923 and became a secretary at WIHS in 1930.  I'm not sure what year this reunion was held.






Class of 1935 hold their 55 year reunion on 8-20-90.

Several new teachers would join the faculty of Washington Irving High School throughout the 1940’s. 

Maynard Duckworth, Kenneth Cubbon, Henry A. Mayer, Hallie May, Edwin Frederick, Thelma Howard, Josephine Swiger and Virginia Robinson would have long and important associations with the school.

1946 – Mr. Orie McConkey retired at the age of seventy-four, after thirty two years as principal at Washington Irving High School.

In the spring of 1946, Mr. McConkey left the school by the west door. His days as an educator and principal were over.  He felt he had done all he could do.

He was truly a firm man, yet he was a fair man. He expected students to be all they could be.  He also expected professionalism and hard work from his teachers. 

 

1946 - Kenneth Cubbon took over as principal at Washington Irving High School when Mr. McConkey retired.


1946 - Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis stage their first show as a comedy team on July 25th, at Club 500 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

 
1946 – Kenneth Cubbon became principal of Washington Irving High School.

             Mr. Cubbon started his teaching career in 1928 as the principal of the Monticello School, which later was renamed  Chestnut Hill School. 




                                           In 1934, Mr. Cubbon was transferred to be principal of the Norwood Grade School.
                                           In 1938, he became the principal of Norwood Junior High School.
                                           In 1943, the school board upped his position to be the new principal of Shinnston High School.
